Do not use canister filters as your central filtration for saltwater. This is freshwater technology! Use a sump for superior saltwater filtration. Sumps allow room for mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration. See our filtration diagram for more info on filtration. Importance of the Sump The sump is the center of all complete saltwater filter systems. Filter pad or a filter sock trap waste from the water entering the sump. We recommend purchasing the largest sump that will fit in your aquarium stand. Having extra space in your aquarium sump makes it easy to upgrade your aquarium system in the future. Filter systems using in-sump protein skimmers and/ or submersible pumps require larger sumps than systems with in-line (external) pumps and hang-on or in-line protein skimmers. You can place pieces of live rock in the sump to act as additional biological filters. It is always better to have extra space in your aquarium sump than not enough.		Sumps
