The aquarium systems we build and recommend rely on biological filtration. Good bacteria will live and multiply in your live rock. See Concept and General System for further explanation. We recommend products for quality, efficiency, and price. For categories with multiple products, the first product listed is our top choice for quality.

Note: Previous Rio pump models were not good pumps. However, the new Rio Hyper Flow pump is excellent. We use these pumps for systems in our store. This is why we recommend them. -Dave

Tips: 1) For sumps, even though we recommend the minimum, buy the biggest you can fit or afford because you'll have room to create a better system. 2) If you think you might upgrade to a bigger tank, buy equipment that will fit your needs later so you can reuse equipment which saves money. 3) Do not use tap water. Get clean, pure water by using a reverse-osmosis system.

Pumps: The return pumps should combine to turn over the volume of the aquarium 10-15 times per hour. Ex. a 100 gallon aquarium should have between 1000 and 1500 gallons pumped through it every hour depending on the type of livestock being kept. We recommend two smaller pumps instead of one. If one fails while you're out of town, you still have one to keep your livestock alive.
