Protein Skimmers How Do Protein Skimmers Work?
Protein skimmers mix air and saltwater rapidly causing dissolved waste to separate from the water, creating foam, which collects in the cup of the protein skimmer. Removing this dissolved waste will decrease nitrates and nuisance algae. A protein skimmer next to live rock is the most important part of filtration in saltwater.
Are all protein skimmers alike or good enough?
No. Picking the right skimmer will set the potential of your tank. We recommend spending money on a high-quality skimmer in the beginning so you do not have to re-buy a better skimmer later. We have seen many hobbyists/customers make this mistake and end up spending more money on loss of livestock and better equipment in the end.
In-Sump or External Skimmers These protein skimmers can be used in your sump or plumbed externally.
In-Sump Only Skimmers
These protein skimmers are for in-sump use only.
Hang-On Skimmers
These protein skimmers hang on the back of your aquarium or sump.
Budget Skimmers These skimmers are not highly recommended but better than nothing.
